The global community is working hard to develop a universal coronavirus vaccine. The goal is to create a vaccine that will protect against all strains of the virus, including SARS-CoV-2. There is currently only one registered vaccine candidate – a trial vaccine developed by the WHO Collaborating Center for Reference and Research on Influenza in China. However, this vaccine only protects against a specific strain of the virus. A new universal covid vaccine is being developed by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. This vaccine is based on an experimental coronavirus strain that has been specifically modified to target all animal-derived coronaviruses. Researchers are optimistic that this vaccine will be effective against all strains of the virus.
