About this image

When couples divorce, their financial obligations change. This is because marriage brings with it a legal agreement between the spouses - known as a marital contract. This contract determines the terms of the spouses' relationship, including their financial obligations. Normally, a spouse who has custody of the children is responsible for their childcare and other living expenses. If spousal support is ordered, it will usually cover these expenses. Additionally, child support may be used to help a parent cover the costs of raising the children.
