About this image

Sticky notes are a ubiquitous part of office life, but few people know how they were invented. In 1968, 3M employee Art Fry was singing in his church choir when he realized that the bookmark he was using was falling out of his hymnal. He thought that if he could create a adhesive that would hold the bookmark in place, it could be used for other things as well. After many failed experiments, Fry finally created a usable adhesive and the first sticky note was born.Today, sticky notes are used for everything from leaving messages to marking pages in books. And with more and more people working from home, it's likely that their popularity will only continue to grow.
